Which EVs are Eligible to Participate?

Could Your EV Share Its Spark?

Some EVs can provide electricity through a standard household-style outlet built into the vehicle. Marin Power is exploring whether appropriately equipped EVs could operate portable pumps during planned emergency missions when grid power is unavailable.

This is an early-stage project. The vehicles listed below are potential candidates, not approved equipment. Eligibility will depend on the exact vehicle, model year, trim, built-in power-export capability, pump requirements, safe parking conditions, and successful testing.

Two Planned Response Levels

Response level Intended use Initial pump target Program status
Level 1 — Neighborhood Response Localized pumping, primarily sump pumps that have lost grid power Approximately ⅓ HP Primary volunteer network
Level 2 — Heavy Response Selected neighborhood choke points or larger drainage problems Approximately 1½–2 HP Smaller, highly selective network

Level 1 generally requires a vehicle to provide enough starting and continuous power for the selected pump through a built-in, standard household-style outlet. Level 2 requires higher-output capability and successful testing with the selected commercial pump.

These are planning categories, not guarantees of assignment. Marin Power will determine whether a vehicle qualifies for a particular response level after reviewing its exact configuration and testing it with the approved equipment.

Which EVs Are Being Considered?

The following categories describe Marin Power’s current planning status. A vehicle’s appearance on this page does not guarantee qualification. Final eligibility depends on the exact vehicle, model year, trim, built-in outlet, power output, pump compatibility, and testing results.

Primary Targets

Vehicle Potential response level Current position
Hyundai IONIQ 5 or IONIQ 6 Level 1 only Primary target
Kia EV6 or EV9 Level 1 only Primary target
Genesis GV60 Level 1 only Primary target
Hyundai IONIQ 9 Level 1 only, if testing succeeds Primary target, subject to configuration review
Ford F-150 Lightning Level 1 or Level 2 Priority target; exact Pro Power Onboard configuration must be verified
Tesla Cybertruck Level 1 or Level 2 Priority target; exact power-export configuration and pump compatibility must be verified

Only vehicles that can operate the approved equipment directly through a built-in, standard household-style outlet will be considered for the initial program. Marin Power is not planning to use adapters or untested connection systems.

Under Evaluation

Vehicle or vehicle family Potential response level Current position
Rivian vehicles with usable built-in external outlets Level 1 only, if testing succeeds Requires testing against the selected pump
Other EVs with built-in power-export capability Level 1 or Level 2 May be considered after capability and equipment testing
Other high-output electric trucks Level 1 or Level 2 May be considered based on tested electrical capability

Vehicles Not Currently Included

Some vehicles are not part of the initial volunteer fleet because Marin Power has not identified a built-in, standard household-style outlet configuration that can be safely and adequately tested with the planned pumps.

This currently includes the Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. Other vehicles that feature built-in household-style outlets without adapters may register their interest for consideration.

“Not currently included” does not necessarily mean that a vehicle can never participate. Its status may change if a suitable built-in power-export capability becomes available and passes Marin Power’s safety and equipment testing.

How Vehicles Are Evaluated

Power-export capability can vary by model year, trim, market, and configuration. A vehicle that can power small household equipment may not automatically be able to start and operate a pump.

Marin Power will consider:

  • Make and model
  • Model year
  • Trim and configuration
  • Built-in household-style outlet
  • Continuous power output
  • Starting or surge capability
  • Voltage and current limits
  • Compatibility with the selected pump
  • Safe parking and operating conditions
  • Results of Marin Power’s equipment testing

What Participation Could Involve

EV owners who eventually participate may be invited to:

  • Keep their vehicle available for a planned emergency mission
  • Respond to an activation request if they are willing and available
  • Park at a designated, mutually agreed location
  • Operate an approved pump through the vehicle’s built-in outlet
  • Provide power for a planned period of up to 24 hours
  • Follow Marin Power’s safety, parking, and operating procedures

Participation is voluntary. An activation request would be an invitation, not an obligation. Equipment, procedures, testing, and the pilot program are still being developed.

Register Your Interest in Participating

If your EV appears on this page, it is a potential candidate—not an approved participant. If your vehicle is not listed, you can select Other in the form and provide its make, model, year, and configuration.

Registering your interest helps Marin Power identify vehicles for future equipment testing and volunteer preparation. It does not guarantee vehicle qualification, pilot participation, an activation request, reimbursement, transportation support, or emergency deployment.
